Cannibal

The original cannibal room: a butcher’s locker, a dinner party, and you as the main course.

In short: Cannibal is an 18+ gory, serial-killer escape room by Escape This at Northbridge (since May 2020) and Sydney CBD. Its own site is cannibalescape.com.au; Melbourne’s cannibal room is Meat Grinder.

Cannibal escape room poster

Cannibal is the room that put gore on the Escape This menu, and the Northbridge copy is the oldest horror room still running in the group. It is also tough: 33% of Northbridge teams get out, against 49% in Sydney.

Official site

Cannibal has its own site with the full story, every rule and its leaderboard. Horrorscape keeps this page short on purpose: the live numbers, how it compares, and where to book.

The Cannibal escape room was a lot of fun. Elise and the crew were great.

My friend and I played the ‘Cannibal’ room and it was indeed as frightening as described. Not an easy escape room though!
Mischa was our guide. Mischa was really switched on and gave us hints when it was clear we were wasting our time. Thanks Mischa!

Questions, answered

Cannibal: questions

Are any of the horror stories set in real places?

Two Northbridge rooms borrow real streets. Cannibal’s story starts with remains on a William Street building site and missing tourists, pointing to a copycat killer called the Northbridge Butcher, and The Haunting is set in Atkins House, a decaying heritage home on Lake Street that locals avoid. The house and the killer are fiction; the streets are a short walk from the venue.

Cannibal or Meat Grinder: which cannibal room should you pick?

Pick by city first: Escape This runs Cannibal in Northbridge and Sydney CBD and Meat Grinder only in Melbourne CBD, so you can’t play both on one trip. Both are 18+ and rated 8 out of 10. Cannibal has years of numbers behind it (33% escape in Northbridge); Meat Grinder is new, with a different villain and story.

Is Meat Grinder just Cannibal under another name?

Not quite. Escape This markets Meat Grinder as its Melbourne cannibal experience and points to the Cannibal site for more, but its booking system treats Meat Grinder as a separate room with its own story, villain and leaderboard. Cannibal itself plays in Northbridge and Sydney CBD.
