Sub-genre II

Haunted house escape rooms

Escape This built its haunted house twice: once as The Haunting, and again a decade later in the story as The Possession.

In short: The haunted house rooms are The Haunting (Northbridge only, 4–12 players) and its sequel The Possession (Northbridge, Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD, 2–8 players). Both are 15+ in ER-OS.

A haunted house room is a slow burn. Nothing chases you; the house just keeps reminding you it is occupied. Escape This says the house was inspired by a real building and its history, and both rooms belong to the same ghost.

Play The Haunting first if you can, because The Possession assumes you have been inside before. You don’t need to, but the return visit lands harder when you recognise the wallpaper.

Questions, answered

Haunted house rooms: questions

Do the horror rooms scare you with more than what you see?

Yes, with sound and smell too. Meat Grinder opens on concrete under swinging hooks, with blood and bleach in the air and steel sounding somewhere deeper in the building. Asylum’s cell smells of bleach and talks to you over the intercom, and in The Haunting a nursery rhyme plays and a child laughs somewhere in the house. Add controlled lighting, darkness and theatrical smoke in some rooms.

What separates a supernatural escape room from a haunted house one?

On Horrorscape, haunted house means a single building with a ghost in it: The Haunting and The Possession at Escape This. Supernatural is the wider shelf for anything beyond the living, so it adds the vampire rooms, Dracula and Van Helsing, to the two haunted houses.
