Thrillers run on pressure rather than the paranormal. Three horror rooms and two spooky outsiders live here, one of them still behind a waitlist.
In short: The thriller rooms are three horror rooms, Buried Alive, Asylum and Zombie Apocalypse, plus The Dunny, which Escape This classes as a spooky thriller rather than horror. The Institute joins them at Perth CBD in December 2026, also as a spooky thriller.
Thriller rooms put you in a situation, not a story about a ghost: restrained in a coffin, cuffed in a ward, locked in with something infected, or stuck in an outback loo as the light goes.
Buried Alive is the outlier for group size: exactly two players in ER-OS. Zombie Apocalypse and Asylum take up to four, and The Dunny goes up to 8 in Perth.

Somewhere on a remote island, an institute is running an experiment it would rather nobody saw. The choices your team makes inside decide how it ends.

Because Escape This files The Dunny under Adventure, not Horror. It has a deranged villain, a deadline at sundown and a creepy outback set, so horror fans ask about it, but it plays for laughs as much as screams. Horrorscape keeps it on the thriller shelf and never counts it among the horror rooms.
Asylum is the one. Its tagline is “It’s all in your head”: you wake restrained in a padded cell that smells of bleach while a voice on the intercom promises therapy until you’re cured, and much of the fear comes from darkness, sound and what you imagine is in the cell with you. Escape This runs it in Northbridge, Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD.
Buried Alive. It begins in total darkness with you and your partner each nailed into a separate coffin by the Undertaker: two boxes, sixty minutes and one game that needs both of you to win. It is exactly two players and 18+, at Escape This Northbridge and Sydney CBD.
Buried Alive and Asylum, mostly. Escape This builds Buried Alive around being restrained in a coffin and Asylum around a padded cell and an unseen tormentor. Zombie Apocalypse adds one infected test subject but plays as a race against the clock, and The Dunny is a spooky thriller with no supernatural element at all.
The Institute is a new Escape This room set in a secretive institute on a remote island, where an experiment is under way and your team’s choices steer the ending. It opens at Perth CBD in December 2026, and Horrorscape files it as a spooky thriller, not a horror room.
Not yet. Escape This is running The Institute as waitlist-only until launch, through escapethis.com.au. Everyone on the waitlist hears first when bookings open and goes into a draw to be among the first teams to play The Institute for free.
Escape This lists The Institute at 4 to 8 players, ages 13 and up, 60 minutes and a difficulty of 7.5 out of 10. Prices are $49 for adults and $39 for under-16s Monday to Thursday, and $65 and $55 Friday to Sunday. It is wheelchair accessible, for one wheelchair per session.
No. Horrorscape’s old page described Zombie Apocalypse as 30 minutes, but Escape This’s booking system now lists it at 60 minutes in Northbridge, Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD. It is still a small-team room, two to four players.
